An educated consumer is the best defense against an incorrectly built deck. Whether you build it yourself or hire a contractor, you owe it yourself and your family to know the correct products and procedures. Twenty years ago decks were built out of wood and for the most part they’re still made from pressure treated cedar or redwood today. The problem with wood decking is that it requires too much maintenance. The newer composite decking and railings will cost more up front but will cost less in the short run (5-7 years) and will always look better. The Deck Network has plenty of shows dedicated to educating the viewers on how a deck should be built. These decks are expensive and doing it incorrectly the first time will only add to the cost. I’ve posted the Deck Network shows in order of importance, watch as many shows as you have time to watch.
